How to Delete All Your Reddit Comments (and What Survives Anyway)
Short answer: Deleting removes your comment from Reddit and detaches your username from it. It does not remove copies made before you deleted. If the text is what worries you, edit it first, then delete — but understand what that does and doesn't fix.
Most guides stop at "click delete on each comment." The part that actually matters is what survives, and how far back you can reach at all.
Deleting is not unpublishing
When you delete a comment, Reddit stops showing it and stops attributing it to you. What it cannot do is reach copies that already left Reddit:
- Sites that mirror Reddit content captured it at the time it was posted.
- Search engines may hold a cached copy until they next crawl the page.
- Anyone who screenshotted or quoted it still has it.
Delete controls what Reddit shows going forward. It has no authority over copies taken before you clicked.
That's not a reason to skip deleting — attribution matters, and removing the link between your username and ten years of opinions is worth doing. It's a reason not to believe the job is finished.
Why you overwrite before you delete
The common advice is to edit each comment into junk text first, then delete it. That works, but not for the reason most people assume.
Overwriting replaces the text at the source. Anything that reads your comment after the edit — a search crawler returning to the page, a mirror doing a fresh pass — sees the replacement, not the original. Anything that already stored the original still has the original. Overwriting is a defence against future copies, not a retraction of past ones.
Two practical consequences:
- Order is fixed. Overwrite, then delete. Once a comment is deleted you can no longer edit it, so deleting first throws away the only chance you had.
- It's worth most on recent comments — the ones that have had the least time to be copied.
The limit nobody mentions: you cannot see all of it
Reddit's own listings only page back so far — in practice around a thousand items per listing. That is not a restriction tools invent; it's what Reddit exposes.
So if you have a decade of history, "delete everything" means "delete everything Reddit will still show you." The oldest material may simply not be reachable through the interface, by you or by any tool. Sorting by controversial or top surfaces a different thousand than sorting by new, which is the only real workaround.
Deleting your account does not delete your comments
This one catches people out. Delete your account and your posts and comments stay exactly where they are, reattributed to [deleted].
If you want the content gone, remove the content first, while you still have an account to do it with. Then delete the account if you still want to.
Before you start
- Pinned or awarded posts — decide whether they're exceptions before a bulk run, not during one.
- Moderator comments — removing them can leave gaps in a subreddit's moderation record.
- Pace. Reddit rate-limits rapid edits and deletes. A large cleanup is unavoidably slow; a tool that races gets throttled and stops.
